Lansing, NY, March 14, 2011 -- ADC USA, Inc. has completed the design, construction, and testing of a small prototype Super-Mini Undulator. A summary of this work will be presented at 2011 Particle Accelerator Conference which is taking place in New York City from March 28 to April 1, 2011. The development of this first superconductive undulator is an extraordinary engineering and scientific achievement in a short amount of time and can open up many potential contracts for the company, says Alexander Deyhim, President and CEO of ADC.
While other superconducting undulators have been built, this is the first device of its kind that has achieved a 7.5 mm period. The next step in this project is to design and build a one meter fully functioning system to be installed at one of the light source facilities.
Based on this achievement, ADC proposes to build a full-fledged super-mini featuring a period length of <10 mm, an overall length of about 1 m, i.e., about 100 periods, and a gap of about 3 mm. This super-mini would be cooled cryogen-free by cryo-coolers and would deliver brilliant hard X-ray photon beams at 3rd generation storage rings or linac-based light sources.
