ADC Completes Successfully Two Complex Neutron Instrument Projects
02/25/2013 - 11/30/-0001

Lansing, NY, February 25, 2013 -- ADC USA, Inc. announced today that it has successfully completed two very complex projects; First unit is the new Time-of-Flight Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) instrument. SANS is a powerful technique for looking at structures of objects on the Nano scale (1-10nm), like polymer molecules, defect structures in metals and ceramics.

Dr Charles Dewhurst (ILL) and Dr. Anna Sokolova, proposed the principal concept of the ToF SANS instrument at reactor source. ADC took the overall concept and designed and built the this system for the ANSTO neutron source in Australia. This consists of a very large vacuum vessel with an internal track for accurately moving a detector up to 18.8 meters. In addition the entire vessel can be accurately moved 1.5 meters using external rails and a ball screw. The front end consists of a sample window and 630 mm gate valve. The rear of the vessel has a hatch with an articulated hinge. There is a central man-way hatch on the top and 17 ports for vacuum pumps, electrical, feed throughs, and sensors. The vessel was designed in compliance with ASME BPVC, Section VIII, Division 1, 2011 Revision, with exceptions for good vacuum practice and approved by the Australian Work Cover Authority. Second unit is a complex selector wheel shutter that was designed and built to support the area of neutron imaging research (neutron radiography/tomography). The selector wheel assembly component as suggested in its name   provide selective aperture options for high resolution or phase contrast imaging and will separate the two beams coming from the in-pile collimator. One beam is blocked and the other passes the selector wheel insert to be used for an imaging experiment. This option gives the flexibility of a large number of different imaging methods, which cannot be realized with the in-pile collimator.
